According to a report in the financial research newsletter "Marketing Services Financial Intelligence", News Corp has sought to dissolve the News International Publishers, parent company of its main UK newspaper publishing subsidiaries that include News Group Newspapers (publisher of "The Sun" and the recently closed "The News of the World") and Times Newspapers.
An application was also made to dissolve a subsidiary of News Group Newspapers called News 2026 that owns the publishing rights to the major titles and collects multi million pound royalties from group companies that actually publish them, but that application has since been withdrawn.
News Group Newspapers made a post-tax profit of £86 million in the year to 30 June 2010, boosted by a dividend from its subsidiary News 2026 derived from royalties received from News Corp newspaper titles. The tax charge on the company's massive profit was a mere £2.5 million.
While the group was busily trying to dissolve some of its companies, it was also registering new ones, including News of the World Publications, News of the World Online, News of the World Media, and News of the World Newspapers – presumably to protect the title while decisions are made about whether it will be reborn in a different guise in the future.
